Crafty Baby Food Jars

There are so many different things you can use these jars for. They make perfect votive holders, jewelry jars, snow globes, spice jars, hair accessories holder, nuts and screw holders just to name a few.When I made jewelry jars, I hot glued big chunky beads to the bottom for legs. Other great ideas for legs would be... wine corks, marbles or small knobs from cabinets, to name a few. I took an old brooch and glued it the lid, then glued beads of similar color around the edge of the lid, to give it a finished look. If you have any mismatched jewelry, that would be perfect for this project. I made several in two different sizes.

Here are instructions for the votive holder. I personally have never burned the candles in the container, I use them for decorative purposes. I first glued tiny beads to the edge of the lid, once the glue was dry, I flipped the lid over and hot glued it to the bottom of the jar. This step is not necessary, It's up to you. You could also glue beads to the bottom for feet. I would suggest using a hot glue gun, in the event that you want to burn the candle, the glue can withstand a higher temp than any average craft glue. I glued tiny beads around the edge of the jar (this helps to mask the fact that it's a jar). I also glued beads in a flower design on the side of the jar for an extra decorative touch.

Here's how I made the snow globe. This project can be done using any size jar. You will need water proof glue (you can find water resistant glue in the plumbing department). I used my hot glue gun but you need to make sure that you apply enough to make a good seal or water could seep out. Start by applying a thick layer of glue on the inside of the jar lid, if you are using a clear glue, sprinkle white glitter on top of it before the glue dries (this is going to be the snow on the ground). You will also want to place your figures where you want them at this time. I purchased small Christmas figures from my local store. After the glue is completely dry, fill the jar with water and add white glitter (enough to make the snow effect when shaken). Twist the lid on tight and seal the outer part of the lid with glue. Wrap ribbon around the lid, covering any of the glue. Turn the jar over, and you have a cute little snow globe. These globes can be made with any other theme. A Valentine globe can be achieved by using red glitter and Valentine figures. You can make these for any occasion, use your imagination.

To use these jars for spices, just add your favorite spice to each one. You can even decorate them to match your decor. For a great spice rack, you will need a narrow piece of wood, a drill and small screw. Start by screwing holes in the lids of the jars large enough to fit the screws. Drill the same size holes in the wood, leaving about 4 inches between holes. Screw the lids of the jars to the piece of wood then attach the wood to the under part of a cabinet. Once the wood is secure, you can now screw the jars to the lids. Now you have a cute spice display and the jars aren't taking up any room. This project can be used to organize many things, jewelry, hair accessories, nuts and bolts, etc.

Baby food jar or any jar

Water resistant glue or hot glue gun
Glue sticks (if using glue gun)
Ribbon
Glitter (whatever color appropriate for your project)
Small figurines

Making Good Use Of Your Corner Cabinets And Hutches

In the furnishing of the living room and dining room, one can often overlook certain pieces of accent furniture that can not only look good, but can also serve a very practical purpose. Let's look at two such items of furniture - corner cabinets and hutches.

The Hutch: Hutches can serve a lot of different purposes. Typically a hutch will have a glass front cabinet or cabinets in its upper half, and then drawers or wooden door cabinets fitted into the lower half.

You can also put photos, other knick knacks, or something solemn like a family urn here. Since you would typically like to display these items, they can be put into the top half of the hutch which has the glass frontages. In a small area where space is limited and you have to make the best of it, a corner cabinet is really an excellent solution since it takes up very little space, in fact makes space for itself in an area of the room which is rarely, if at all, utilized.

Since it easily stows away in one corner, the corner cabinet takes little space and can be used not only for storage and display purposes, but as a very attractive design element. You can use the mirror trick very effectively as well - fitting the inside of the corner cabinet with mirrors gives the illusion of added space and also reflects light truly helping to enhance the look of that corner of your room.

Using Stock Materials to Design a Custom Kitchen

When you are remodeling your kitchen, you can keep costs down by using stock items in your design. You can take a stock kitchen cabinet and give it a really unique look with just a few modifications. Here are a couple of things that you can do to start with stock items and end up with a custom look.

Go to your local home improvement store and take a little trip through their kitchen model displays. You can find some great decorating ideas that may help you to add your touch to a stock item and make it custom.

One really dynamic way to use stock cabinets and have them look custom is to use two contrasting finishes in the same style of cabinet in your kitchen. For example, you may choose a light oak finish on the cabinets in your kitchen and showcase the area around your stove by using the same cabinet in a cherry wood finish. By mixing the two cabinet colors you have created a beautiful focal point in your kitchen.

Another option is to pull several of your upper cabinets forward just a few inches. Adding two or three inches makes a huge difference visually. By bolting either a 2' X 4' or a 2' X 6' to the wall you can then attach your cabinets to the braces. Then you can add a side door and use this narrow space to store platters or baking pans.

Another little trick that you can use to get a custom look from your stock cabinets is to stagger the cabinet heights. You can design the cabinet line in your kitchen to pop up every other cabinet, or the middle cabinet on each wall can be higher. You can stagger the heights by simply mounting the cabinets at different heights or you can install different sized cabinets side by side. You can also stack cabinets in unexpected ways to add interesting configurations to the doors. For example, you can add a column of short cabinets that you would normally see over the refrigerator to make what looks like a multi door single cabinet, thus adding visual interest to your cabinet faces.

You can also take this look one step further and configure two short cabinets with a shelf in between. This makes a great display shelf to break up the symmetry of a wall of cabinets.

By using molding to finish off the top of your cabinets, you can make them look like custom built-in cabinets. You can also add molding to the edge of any shelves that you install to give them a polished look.

Update the hardware on your cabinets and you complete the custom look. By finding unique drawer pulls and fun cabinet knobs, you can give your cabinets a high-end custom look. You may find knobs just about anywhere like eBay, an antique store, a flea market or a thrift shop. You may also want to check a salvage yard or a shop that recycles building materials.

The options go on and on, but getting a wine glass shelf or rack that meets your needs, fulfills your preference and will not fracture your bank account is not nearly as hard as it sounds. The kind of stemware rack you select should be founded on a number of elements.

1. What number of wine glasses do you intend on hanging?
2. How ample are the sets of stemware? You may require a little extra area if your suspending burgundy glasses or snifters, while champagne flutes fill little area by comparison.
3. What area are you placing it in? If your putting it in the kitchen it probably need to look differently than it would if you were placing it in your living room.
4. What are the colors and interior decoration of the area?
